Course Description

The course is an introduction to mathematical analysis with an emphasis on proofs and logic. Topics to be covered include:

  • Logic, Sets and Real Numbers
  • Sequences and Limits
  • Point-Set Topology of Real Numbers
  • Continuity
  • The Derivative
  • Sequences and Series of Functions
  • Uniform Convergence and Equicontinuity

Textbook

The textbook for the course is “Understanding Analysis” by S. Abbott.

Grading Scheme

Grades will be determined as follows:

  • Final Exam30%
  • Midterms35%
  • Homework35%

Exams

There will be two midterm exams, each with an in class and a take home portion. The take home portion will resemble the homework but you are not allowed to collaborate on the midterm exams. The lowest of your four scores (two in-class and two take-home exams) will be dropped.

There will be a final exam at the end of the semester.

Homework

Homework will be assigned weekly and due on Fridays at the start of class. You may (and are in fact encouraged) to work together solving homework problems but you must write up your own solutions to hand in. The lowest two homework scores will be dropped. Homework problems will be assigned from the textbook for the most part.
